IV Therapy at Home in London

Specialist intravenous therapy delivered by experienced IV nurses across North & Central London

About Our IV Therapy Service

Intravenous (IV) therapy at home allows patients to receive essential medications, hydration and nutritional support without the need for a prolonged hospital stay. Golders Green Nursing provides specialist IV therapy services across North and Central London, delivered by nurses with a minimum of three years’ experience in intravenous therapy.

We can arrange up to three IV therapy visits per day, seven days a week, enabling complex treatment regimes to be carried out safely and comfortably at home. Our IV nurses carry all necessary clinical equipment, maintain full documentation, and communicate directly with your prescribing physician or hospital team.

Our IV therapy service is available both for planned treatment – such as home antibiotic therapy following hospital discharge – and for urgent or unplanned IV nursing needs.

What Our IV Therapy Service Covers

Our specialist IV nurses are experienced in administering a wide range of intravenous treatments:

  • IV antibiotic therapy – OPAT (Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy) at home
  • IV hydration therapy – rehydration for those unable to maintain adequate oral intake
  • IV nutritional support – parenteral nutrition where oral feeding is not possible
  • IV medication administration – a wide range of intravenous medications as prescribed
  • PICC line and central line care – management and maintenance of long-term IV access
  • Subcutaneous infusions – syringe driver management for palliative patients

Why IV Therapy at Home?

Hospital admissions solely for IV therapy are often unnecessary and disruptive for patients – particularly the elderly, those with dementia, or those in palliative care for whom hospital environments can be distressing.

Home IV therapy offers significant advantages:

  • Avoidance of hospital-acquired infections
  • Recovery in familiar, comfortable surroundings
  • Maintained independence and quality of life during treatment
  • Reduced anxiety – particularly for people with dementia or cognitive impairment
  • Family involvement in care and recovery
  • Often comparable or lower cost to extended hospital admission

Many of London’s leading private hospitals refer patients to us specifically for home IV therapy, recognising the clinical and patient experience benefits of treatment at home.

How Our IV Therapy Service Works

We work closely with your prescribing physician or hospital team to ensure safe, accurate IV therapy at home.

Step 1: Clinical Referral or Direct Enquiry

Contact us directly or ask your hospital consultant to refer you. We review the treatment prescription, discuss the schedule and confirm all clinical requirements before visits begin.

Step 2: IV Nurse Assignment

We assign a specialist IV nurse with experience in your specific treatment type. They review your prescription and any clinical notes before the first visit.

Step 3: IV Therapy Begins at Home

Your IV nurse attends at the agreed times, prepares and administers the IV therapy, monitors for any adverse reactions, and documents each session in full.

Step 4: Ongoing Communication with Your Medical Team

We maintain regular communication with your prescribing physician, reporting on treatment progress, any clinical observations and completion of the treatment course.

Step 5: Post-Treatment Review

At the conclusion of your IV therapy course, we provide a full clinical summary. If ongoing nursing or home care support is needed, we transition seamlessly to the appropriate service.

Frequently Asked Questions About IV Therapy at Home

What types of IV therapy can be administered at home?

Our specialist IV nurses can administer intravenous antibiotics, hydration therapy, and other prescribed IV medications at home. We carry all the necessary ancillaries and require only the drug and a prescription from your consultant. Up to three visits per day can be arranged to accommodate treatment schedules.

Is IV therapy at home safe?

Yes, when delivered by qualified and experienced nurses. All our IV nurses have a minimum of three years’ experience in IV administration. They follow strict clinical protocols for line care, drug administration and infection control. Our nurse-led oversight means any complications are identified and managed quickly, with direct escalation to your medical team if needed.

How does IV therapy at home work after hospital discharge?

Many patients are discharged from hospital with a PICC line or cannula in place and a prescription for IV antibiotics to continue at home. Our director works directly with NHS ward teams to coordinate discharge planning, ensuring you have everything you need to be safely discharged with all the right medication and equipment. Our IV nurse then visits at the prescribed times to administer treatment.

Can I go about my normal life while receiving IV therapy at home?

In most cases, yes. Our nurses visit at scheduled times, administer the IV treatment – which typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the medication – and then leave you to continue your day. This is one of the main advantages of home IV therapy compared to remaining in hospital, where you would be confined to a ward between treatments.
